FLOATING IN THE FOREST
Floating in the Forest Nagano, Japan
This is a villa built to float in a beautiful forest. Having acquired a lush green plot of land facing a water catchment in the area, the client wanted a residence that would allow them to fully enjoy the charm of the place. In response, the architecture is designed to be like a single-story building, slightly off the ground. By setting the building off the ground, landscaping was minimized and the gently sloping topography remained as it used to be. The small footprint foundations do not damage the roots of the surrounding trees and do not block the flow of groundwater. Moisture from the ground, winter snow and ground freezing are kept away by floating. The long, narrow building can receive sunlight in winter from any part of it. This is a house for experiencing the changing seasons with the occasional rain, wind and birds.
